“can i just ask..?”

TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT HOW YOU GOT INTO THIS WEDDING VIDEOGRAPHY BUSINESS…
Video Lou is actually a side project of my normal day job and it’s proper lovely to spend my weekends and holidays escaping the everyday by being able to exercise my creative prowess whilst satisfying my ridiculous love for a good wedding! But there’s more to me than just a passion for weddings – I did a degree in Broadcast Journalism (which involved stints at the BBC and training with big industry bods and that) so I know a thing or two about cameras, framing, editing, producing, shooting under pressure and all of that stuff you’d expect from someone you’re paying to film the most important day of your life. My degree somewhat inspires my style though as I leave off the fancy effects and put videos together in a clean-cut chronological fashion to help you relive your wedding day as it happened – I’m sentimental like that!

But honestly, the main reason why I decided to set up this little jaunt was because I absolutely LOVE wedding videos (yep, I’m one of those weirdos who gets all the feels over wedding videos of people I don’t even know!). Ever since my own wedding in July 2016, I realised how valuable it is to preserve the memories of the day as it whizzes by in a ridiculously happy blur. So when a good friend of mine said they couldn’t afford a videographer for their wedding, my heart broke a little, I decided to do a cheeky highlights video for her (shot on the sly with nothing but my iPhone to hand!), I loved filming and editing it a bit too much…and that’s how Video Lou was born!

HOW DO WE GO ABOUT BOOKING YOU?
If you love what you see and would like me to join your wedding team, please get in touch by emailing hello@videolou.co.uk. It’d be great if you could tell me your wedding date, your venue(s) and what package you’d like me to capture to make the booking process super quick. I’ll send you back a quote to check you’re happy with everything and a booking form which will just ask you for a few essential details for my records.

All you need to do to secure your date is to send back a completed booking form and a £200 deposit. I know full well how expensive weddings can be so I don’t ask for the rest of the balance until 14 days before you say ‘I do’. It’s as easy as that!

WHAT DOES YOUR PRICING INCLUDE?
It literally isn’t in my soul to surprise you with extra costs at a later date so when you first get in touch, the quote you receive from me will be the final total so you can lock it into your wedding spreadsheet with peace of mind! My package prices are inclusive of my time on the day including my travel to any venue within 60 miles of my home in Castle Donington, plus the time it will take for me to edit your videos afterwards. My packages also include 3 DVDs plus a USB, all of which will contain your edited videos and the uncut versions of your ceremony, speeches and first dance. Any copyright licences that I purchase to use on your videos are covered in your package price too.

ARE YOU WILLING TO TRAVEL?
You’re talking to someone who has spent most of their life travelling up and down the country for fun so I absolutely have no problem with loading up a few of my favourite sing-a-long Spotify playlists and spending a couple of hours on the road in order to shoot your wedding day! I’m based in Derbyshire and will travel to any venue within 60 miles of my home address in DE74 for no additional cost. If your wedding is taking place a little further afield, that’s not a problem at all – I will ask for a bit extra to cover my fuel and depending on where your special day is taking place, I may need to book a budget hotel the night before as well because no-one wants to be worrying about me getting stuck in traffic miles away (it would be Sod’s Law right?!) on what should be the most enjoyable morning of your life! I’ll be sure to include any extra costs in my initial quote.

ARE YOU ABLE TO OFFER TAILORED VIDEOGRAPHY PACKAGES?
If your wedding is a little different than the packages offered, no worries! Please let me know what you’re after and I’ll put together a bespoke quote.

WILL YOU FILM SAME-SEX OR MULTI-CULTURAL WEDDINGS?
Of course! I currently have experiences of English civil ceremonies and church weddings so I am open to any guidance on weddings for different cultures and faiths to ensure I capture all the important parts of the celebrations!

HOW DO YOU WORK WITH PHOTOGRAPHERS?
Before you secure me for your date, please double check that your photographer is happy to work with a videographer (some may have a term about this within their contract). In terms of how I work with them during your wedding celebrations, I very much let them do their own thing and would never stop them from executing their vision or style. All I ask is that they give me a clear shot straight down the aisle during your ceremony and a decent spot to film your speeches from. As I pride myself on filming your wedding day in an unobtrusive style, it works best for me if your photographer allows me to follow you for some parts of your couple’s photoshoot, just so I can get lots of lovely candid footage of you basking in newlywed bliss! However, if that isn’t possible, I will need to take you away for some additional shooting time if you wish to have footage captured of you as a couple.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU BEFORE THE WEDDING DAY?
After I’ve locked your date into my diary, I’ll leave you to enjoy the rest of your planning until about two months before the big day. At this point, I’ll send you a questionnaire asking for some essential details about your celebrations so I know where to be, at what time and find out exactly what you’ve got planned so I don’t miss a moment. I will then arrange a video chat with you a few weeks before your wedding to ensure I’ve interpreted the information on your questionnaire correctly and really, just to say hello – you’re inviting me into your lives at one of the most special times so I don’t want to be a stranger! I understand that for that extra bit of reassurance that you may prefer to meet me in person – this is fine too. Just let me know and we’ll work out a time and location that suits.

WHAT HAPPENS ON OUR ACTUAL WEDDING DAY?
My day starts whenever and wherever you want me to begin, but at least an hour before your ceremony is due to get going so I can grab some gorgeous shots of the venue and capture the pre-wedding buzzes of excitement rippling through your guests. Then it’s all hands-on deck for the rest of the day – I’ll only down tools whilst you’re enjoying your wedding breakfast – until around 30 minutes after your first dance, the idea being that I can capture everyone having a jolly good knees-up before I leave you to dance the night away.

DO WE NEED TO FEED YOU AT OUR WEDDING?
I know weddings are never cheap so I certainly don’t expect you to foot the bill for me to enjoy the same wedding breakfast menu that you’re laying on for your guests. However, if you could offer some form of meal, that would be wonderful seeing as I will be with you for pretty much all of your wedding celebrations! Venues often have cheaper menu options which you can order for suppliers so it’s worth having a chat with them about this sort of stuff. If you can’t feed me, no worries – just let me know in advance so I can bring some munch with me.

HOW LONG WILL IT BE BEFORE WE RECEIVE OUR VIDEO?
My focus is on getting beautiful footage of you on the day which I then put into a simple, clean-cut edit for your videos. Depending on how busy my schedule is, I aim to get highlights reels finished between two to four weeks after your wedding date. If you have booked ‘The Full Works’ package, you can expect to receive your films between four to eight weeks after your wedding date due to it being a longer product. I pride myself with being hot on meeting deadlines so you’ll always be kept in the loop as to when you can expect the link to your videos to land in your email inbox!

CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT YOU MEAN BY ‘UNCUT’ FOOTAGE?
I will shoot your ceremony and speeches using three cameras, one of which I’ll always position so it gets a nice still long shot of everyone important. I then pull the raw footage from this camera and I convert it straight into a video for you, hence the term ‘uncut’ as it isn’t edited. I will ask if someone (usually the groom) will wear a discreet lapel mic during the ceremony and use a small dictaphone for your speeches, just so your uncut footage comes with crystal clear sound of all those important words that are exchanged during the day. I don’t share these videos publicly as I feel these are the true intimate moments only for the eyes of those who you want to see it. I like to provide them so you have a raw memory of the whole thing rather than me selecting the best bits and putting music on top!

WE LOVE VIDEOS WHICH INCLUDE SOUND FROM THE SPEECHES AND CEREMONY. CAN YOU OFFER THAT?
Oh, I love those videos too! All of my ‘The Full Works’ films are edited in a cinematic style but I’m happy to do a cinematic edit for a highlights reel for couples who book ‘The Best Bits’ packages too – it’ll just take me a little longer to edit. Even if you don’t want a cinematic edit for your wedding highlights reel, I still ask for someone (usually the groom) to wear a discreet lapel mic during your ceremony and use a small dictaphone for your speeches to ensure I record the most important words of the day with quality results to use for your uncut footage.

WHO IS THE SECOND VIDEOGRAPHER FOR ‘THE FULL WORKS’ PACKAGE?
Video Lou is actually me and my lovely husband, Adam who is the brains behind the business and specs all of my kit – he is just as passionate about videography and weddings as me and has already shot some of the footage you’ve seen in my existing work. As ‘The Full Works’ is a significantly longer video than a highlights reel, having two of us shooting your day means we can capture twice as much footage. It also helps the shooting process to be a lot more efficient as we can be in two places at once – for example, I’ll be with the bride getting ready and Adam will be getting lots of beautiful set up footage of your venue. Adam has over ten years experience in the events and wedding industry so you can rest assured that you will get a discreet and professional service from both of us.

WE’RE WORRIED THAT BOOKING A VIDEOGRAPHER WILL MAKE A MEDIA CIRCUS OF OUR WEDDING. HAVE YOU ANY WORDS OF REASSURANCE?
I have spoken to countless couples with this concern and it’s a totally valid worry to have. In fact, nothing is more important to me than ensuring you and all of your guests are happy and relaxed throughout your wedding day – if you are being directed or have a camera pointed in your face, I won’t be able to capture you in the most natural way and therefore I pride myself in taking a subtle and unobtrusive approach to filming your day. You won’t hear a single instruction from me and I simply go in whatever direction your celebrations take me. As someone who has been there, done that and very much got the t-shirt, I can assure you that there are times in the day when you feel like the only two people in the room. My job is to show you what everyone else was doing at that moment as well as being able to transport you back there again and again!

I also use compact equipment and DSLR style cameras (that look like photography cameras) so you and your guests won’t feel like you’re on a wedding edition of ‘Big Brother’!

WE ASSUME YOU WILL BE COVERED BY ALL THE NECESSARY INSURANCES?
Absolutely! I have Public Liability and Indemnity insurance.
